Solar panels in Perth
Perth roofs, Perth output, what it costs — and how we install through MCS-certified partners.
Why Perth is different
Perth sits inland and sheltered
The Tay valley position means Perth is drier than the west coast and gets 3,300–3,800 kWh per year from a 4kWp south-facing array.
Slate, pantile or concrete tile
Fixings are specified per roof type at survey. Slate hooks slide under individual slates without drilling.

Perth roofs and fixings
Perth’s housing stock ranges from Victorian and Edwardian sandstone villas in Kinnoull and Craigie — with their steep pitches and dormers that decide panel layout — to 1930s bungalows and semis across Letham, Tulloch and Cherrybank, and new-build estates at Bertha Park and Scone. Each roof type needs a different fixing approach.
Slate is the most common material on older Perth properties. Our installers use hooks that slide under individual slates without drilling. Older Perthshire cottages with pantile roofs need a different bracket entirely. Every fixing method is specified per roof at survey — there is no standard approach applied blindly.
Glen-side and hill-farm roofs across Highland Perthshire — Glen Almond, Strathardle, above Comrie and Crieff — carry higher wind loading than sheltered city roofs. Our installers specify wind-rated mounting rails for exposed sites. Tree canopy across the county also means shading checks matter more than on the coast.

Output ranges for Perth
Perth sits at 56.40°N in the Tay valley — inland, sheltered, and drier than the west coast. A south-facing 4kWp array here produces around 3,300–3,800 kWh a year. East or west-facing roofs are viable but produce roughly 15–20% less.
At midsummer Perth gets about 17 hours and 23 minutes of daylight. At midwinter that drops to around 6 hours and 36 minutes. A battery helps bridge the gap — storing summer surplus and letting you buy cheap off-peak electricity in winter.
Planning and conservation areas
Solar panels on a domestic roof are generally permitted development in Scotland and do not need planning permission. The exception is where the property is in a conservation area or is a listed building.
Perth has several conservation areas — Perth Central, Kinnoull, Bridgend, Scone — and listed buildings across the city and county. Panels visible from the street in these areas may need planning or listed-building consent. We state this plainly because some installers do not. This is checked at survey.
What we specify
Panels: Jinko Tiger Neo — a tier-one panel. Inverter: SolarEdge HD-Wave — module-level optimisation, which matters on Perth roofs where dormers and chimneys create partial shading. Warranty and guarantee terms are confirmed in writing on your quotation.
These are named in your written proposal. Components are not substituted without your agreement.

Pairing panels with a battery lets you store surplus power for evening use. If your home runs on oil or LPG, a heat pump could reduce your heating costs too. See our cost guide for what affects the price.

Solar isn't right for every Perth home
It probably isn't for you if:
- Your only roof faces north with no east or west option
- Heavy shade from trees or neighbouring buildings blocks direct sunlight for most of the day
- You’re in a flat without roof rights or shared-owner consent
- The building is listed and you would rather not apply for listed-building consent
- You plan to move within the next two years
If that's you, we'll say so on the first call rather than send a surveyor.

Hours shown are for the 15th of each month at Perth (56°N), calculated from standard solar geometry. Actual generation depends on cloud cover, panel orientation and shading.

Solar panel questions
Already have solar?
Panels in Perthshire collect lichen, tree pollen and bird mess that rain doesn’t shift — more so beneath the county’s canopy. A patch of shading on one cell can run hot enough to damage it permanently. Scottish Energy Efficiency runs a monitoring and care plan; details and prices are on the main site.
