Glossary

kWp
Kilowatt-peak — the maximum output of a solar panel or system under standard test conditions. A typical Perth home system is 3–4 kWp.
kWh
Kilowatt-hour — a unit of energy. One kWh is roughly the energy used by a kettle boiling 10 times.
SEG
Smart Export Guarantee — a scheme that pays you for electricity you export to the grid. Rates are set by each energy supplier.
MCS
Microgeneration Certification Scheme — a quality assurance standard for renewable energy installers. Required for SEG registration.
DNO
Distribution Network Operator — the company that manages the local electricity network. In Perth and Perthshire, the DNO is SSEN (Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks).
G98/G99
The engineering standards for connecting generation equipment to the grid. Systems up to 16A per phase (about 3.68 kW) fall under G98 and connect automatically. Larger systems need a G99 application to the DNO, which can take 8–12 weeks.
