Why Perth homes need a battery
17 hours of summer daylight
Perth gets over 17 hours of daylight at midsummer. Without a battery, much of that surplus is exported. A battery stores it for use in the evening.

Why a battery matters at 56°N
Perth gets over 17 hours of daylight at midsummer and under 7 at midwinter. Without a battery, surplus power generated on a long June day is exported to the grid. With a battery, you store that surplus and use it in the evening instead of buying electricity from the grid.
In winter, when solar output drops, a battery lets you charge overnight on a cheap off-peak tariff and use that stored power during the day instead of buying at the full daytime rate. The battery works year-round, not just in summer.
The tariffs a battery unlocks
Without solar and a battery, you pay the daytime import rate for everything you use. An installation unlocks two things: cheaper off-peak rates on time-of-use tariffs and the Smart Export Guarantee (export payments vary by supplier). A battery lets you use both to full advantage.
How it works in practice
With solar panels and a battery, more of the electricity you generate is used in the home (self-consumption), displacing electricity you would otherwise buy from the grid. The remainder is exported.

A battery isn’t for everyone
It probably isn't for you if:
- You don’t have solar panels and don’t plan to install them — a standalone battery rarely makes financial sense without generation
- Your electricity bill is already low and you spend most of the day at home using power as it is generated
- You’re in rented accommodation without the landlord’s agreement
- You plan to move within the next two years
